From neighborhood-wide events to school-based events, our focus is to bring community members together to build social cohesion and foster neighborhood pride.

Jazz in July

La Placita, a newly re-named commercial development on East Grand Avenue, hosted the first ever Jazz in July in these neighborhoods. A popular Latino band performed next to freshly painted building facades, bringing in over 500 attendees and allowing for the local businesses to open shop or set up a stand to sell their food or products. Guests from all over the community got to experience La Placita’s wide variety of amenities. Neighborhood Development Corporation took the lead on planning the 2015 event.

Bike Rodeo

This one-time event, hosted by Capitol Park neighborhood and the Des Moines Bicycle Collective, brought in over 150 school-aged participants to learn about bike safety and basic riding skills, and ended with the opportunity to pick up a bike. Carver Elementary parking lot was filled with excited kids for an entire morning and afternoon in May.

Holiday Party

The third annual Holiday Party was a huge hit this year at Hiatt Middle School. Over 400 guests attended the 2015 party, where everyone had the opportunity to get a photo with Santa & Mrs. Claus, create an ornament, get their face painted, gather warm winter clothing items, enjoy live entertainment, and share a warm meal together.
